American Hospital Association Announces Inaugural Class of Next Gen Fellows

CHICAGO — The health care landscape is changing in unprecedented and unpredictable ways. New challenges and disruptions on multiple fronts across the health care continuum are pressing hospitals and health systems to seek future leaders with bold perspectives and specialized skills – from technology and data analytics to population health and business-model transformation. Tomorrow’s leaders must have the knowledge, skills and adaptability to navigate change and create a culture of innovation, accountability and inclusion.

How health care shapes the next generation of leaders is vital to its future success.

The American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Next Generation Leaders Fellowship, focused on developing leaders and empowering them to bring about real and lasting change in health care, announces its inaugural class of fellows consisting of 34 talented individuals, including 12 scholarship recipients.

"The coronavirus pandemic is changing health care forever. And our health care leaders must drive that change," says Andy Shin, chief operating officer and senior vice president, AHA Center for Health Innovation. "These fellows have an opportunity to shape the teams, organizations and systems of the future. They will join a cohort of peers and some of our country’s most innovative leaders both in and outside of health care to shape their own unique leadership signature."

Fellows hail from 20 states across urban, suburban, and rural communities, each making significant contributions to their respective hospitals through a wide range of roles, including quality, risk management, nursing, market intelligence, business development and geriatrics.

During the 12-month long fellowship program, participants will hone essential skills, such as expanding innovation capacity, driving organizational change and digital transformation, and leading the shift from health care to well care.

Each fellow is carefully matched with a mentor for personalized guidance. Fellows will work one-on-one with their mentors to execute a transformation project specific to a challenge within their organization. Participants will engage virtually through inquiry-based modules, discussions and challenge-based solution sprints.

The John A. Hartford Foundation is providing scholarships for a cohort of Age-Friendly Fellows who will participate in the Next Generation Leaders Fellowship. These applicants will be asked to implement the 4Ms Framework at their organization for their change project in the fellowship program.

The exclusive opportunity builds on decades-worth of leadership development programming, such as the AHA Transformation Fellowship that counts numerous health system executive leaders and industry change-makers among its alumni network.
