Study: Consumer Engagement Improves Care

Consumer engagement activities that involve patients and family as partners on the care team are associated with increases in patient safety and treatment savings, research in the Journal of Nursing Administration finds. The study included a literature review and 25 supplementary interviews with nursing executives and chief nursing officers. The authors concluded that consumer engagement results in reduced length of stay, reduced medication errors, and that engagement initiatives support employee health and reduce compassion fatigue. Nurse Helps Dying Patient Take First Flight

Tracey Hoffman, an oncology nurse at Norton Hospital in Indiana, went above and beyond to help fulfill the dying wish of one of her patients, USA Today reports. When she learned that 69-year-old Joe Booth —who was losing his fight with prostate cancer — wanted to fly in a plane for the first time, she took to Facebook to ask for help. More than 25 pilots volunteered, and Booth was able to take his first flight at the end of March — even taking control of the plane and flying it temporarily.

Nurse Appointments in the News

Jennersville Hospital in West Grove, PA, has named Claire Mooney, vice president and permanent chief nursing officer, the organization announced. Previously, Bradley was the senior nursing director for the critical care and medical surgical divisions at Reading Hospital in West Reading, PA. 

Karen Davis will succeed Patricia Witzel as the University of Rochester (NY) Medical Center associate vice president and chief nursing executive in June, URMC announced. Davis also will serve as the assistant dean for clinical practice at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. She has previously held roles as faculty associate at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and chief nursing officer at Howard County General Hospital, a Johns Hopkins Health System affiliate in Columbia, MD.

Berwick, PA.-based Commonwealth Health's Berwick Hospital Center named Maribeth Angeli to serve as chief nursing officer, the hospital announced. Angeli most recently served as chief nursing officer at Tyler Memorial Hospital.
