Resilient journey: Overcoming setbacks on the path to a healthier life
Kate Leissler's journey to a healthier life has been filled with determination and resilience. Eleven years ago, at a weight of 340 pounds, she decided to take control of her weight, successfully losing 150 pounds through Weight Watchers. However, the COVID pandemic and personal setbacks, including the sudden loss of her husband, led to weight gain and physical discomfort. Despite these challenges, Kate remained committed to her health and sought bariatric surgery at Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center to help her regain control.
With the support of specialist Sara Wong, M.D., and her team, Kate underwent gastric sleeve surgery, which significantly reduced her stomach size and helped her manage her hunger. The surgery was successful and marked a new beginning for Kate, who has embraced a healthier diet and increased physical activity, including walking and weightlifting.
“They’re caring, compassionate people and only a phone call away,” said Leissler. “With everything I’ve been through, Dr. Wong has become a good friend. She went above and beyond with me, which I’m sure she does with every patient. Her support just made me feel at ease about everything.”
Today, Kate has reached a stable weight of 209 pounds, with a goal of further weight loss — a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of compassionate care on achieving personal health goals.
