Childbirth is hard under any circumstances; the addition of major abdominal surgery means that moms who undergo cesarean sections often face different challenges than those who give birth vaginally. Now Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is offering a new postpartum rehabilitation program specifically targeted to moms who underwent C-sections.

In addition to pain management, help with breastfeeding and other supports, the rehab program offers extra instruction and care for stretching, circulation, and even getting out of bed without disturbing the incision. Since the occupational and physical therapists in the program can often spend more time with the new mom than doctors or nurses, they’re also trained to pick up on signs of postpartum depression or other behavioral health issues that may be affecting the mom. They can also train other family members in techniques to support the mom once they return home.
