Specialized Surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals Allows Patient to Regain Use of His Hand
The Center for Hand Surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst restored the use of Harry Perks' right hand after 10 years of immobility due to spasticity from a drug overdose. Despite previous physical and occupational therapy, and Botox injections that improved his left hand and lower extremities, his right hand remained unchanged. Eitan Melamed, M.D., chief of hand surgery, saw potential in Harry due to his mental toughness and family support. In February, Harry underwent a selective neurectomy combined with tendon lengthening surgery, a 3-hour procedure that involved cutting nerve branches and lengthening contracted muscles to improve function and straighten the wrist.
Following the surgery and months of occupational therapy, Harry can now shower, dress, and feed himself, and even use his laptop to stay connected with friends. Harry expressed immense gratitude, stating that the surgery changed his life. His father, Harry Perks Sr., described the transformation as a miracle, noting the return of Harry's confidence and independence. Dr. Melamed is thrilled with Harry's progress and encourages others with similar conditions to consider surgery to improve hand function.
