Kaiser Permanente Northern California has opened a new high-tech laboratory in San Jose to conduct common genetic testing and increase access to personalized “precision” treatment based on genome testing.

The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regional Genomics Laboratory is part of an effort to expand and streamline genetic testing routinely done by the insurer and health care provider and is set to be fully operational by the end of this year.

The lab’s former facility was conducting 30,000 tests a year, but the new robotic equipment has allowed the lab to double that — all without hiring new staff. The lab is planning to conduct over 60,000 tests this year with plans to expand to 160,000 tests per year by 2029.
