Greenville Health System – GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail

Overview

Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 21-mile multi-use greenway system that runs along the Reedy River, connecting Greenville County with schools, parks, and local businesses. The GHS Swamp Rabbit will continue to grow, offering fun, non-motorized recreation and transportation opportunities wherever it goes.

Impact

The trail draws thousands of people who want a way to enjoy the outdoors, get exercise and relax. The trail provides a safer means of doing just that, as there are no cars and trucks to dodge. In addition, local businesses profit from the trail.

A December 2014 study conducted by Furman University showed that use of the Swamp Rabbit Trail has been increasing year over year. Trail use rose 24.3 percent from 2012 to 2013, with 501,236 users enjoying it in 2013. Percentages of male and female Trail users that are minorities also increased year over year, rising from 5.8 percent female and 8.1 percent male in 2012 to 7.7 percent and 9.7 percent, respectively in 2013. Of all users, 76.3 percent were observed enjoying it on weekends; average time spent on the Trail was 1.5 hours. The most popular times of year for Trail use were when temperatures were between 61-70 degrees.

The study also revealed that the Swamp Rabbit Trail made a $6.7 million economic impact on the local economy in its third year. In 2013, 25 percent of users were tourists who spent $6.7 million in Greenville County. Nineteen businesses in close proximity to the Trail were surveyed, reporting increases in sales and revenue ranging from 10 percent to as much as 85 percent.

Lessons Learned

Investments in the community that enable area residents to become healthier themselves aligns with GHS’ Accountable Communities approach to improving the health of the communities it serves. As a health system, GHS is committed to continuing to find opportunities to provide resources that promote healthy behaviors.

Future Goals

Future system and Greenville County goals include continued yearly increases in trail use, as well as a positive economic impact. The City of Travelers Rest has seen a transformation in their growth. Business continues to open on the trail; in turn, community residents are being active and healthy.
