Cut CLABSI

White Plains (N.Y.) Hospital Center's interdisciplinary team developed a disinfection procedure that successfully reduced central line-associated blood stream infections by 70 percent. The procedure includes disinfecting the catheter hub on peripherally inserted central catheters with an IV disinfection cap system. This adjustment to the process created a closed system that effectively closed off avenues for bacteria to infect a patient.

This case study is part of the HANYS Triple Aim series highlighting how New York hospitals are improving health, enhancing quality and reducing costs. Hospitals, nursing homes, and home care agencies across New York State are pursuing the Triple Aim. In spite of fiscal constraints, its members are embracing the challenge of transforming health care and are implementing new and innovative approaches to delivery.
