Sutter Davis Hospital - Volunteer Doula Program

The purpose of the Volunteer Doula Program is to provide free doula support to every laboring or postpartum patient in need who is admitted to the Sutter Davis Hospital (SDH) Birthing Center. The term “doula” comes from the Greek word meaning “a woman who serves.” SDH volunteer doulas are non-clinical members of the care team who provide support in accordance with the medical/midwifery plan of care and patient preference. The doula’s role includes hands-on physical and psychological support during the strenuous, emotional, and physical act of birth. An average of 23 percent of SDH births are attended by volunteer doulas each month. Doulas receive in-depth training about the physiologic process of the birth as well as hands-on training in how to provide support to a woman and her partner during the childbirth process.

Who is it for?

Laboring or post-partum women giving birth at the SDH Birthing Center.

Why do they do it?

There are several measurable outcomes supporting the use of doulas for continuous labor support during childbirth.

Impact

The Sutter Davis Birthing Center delivers about 1,500 babies per year. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating the most positive experience, the average patient survey score is 5. Patients attended by volunteer doulas in the program have fewer medical interventions, and verbalize a more rewarding, joyous and memorable birth experience. Furthermore, when the Doula is present, baby-bonding is improved, breast feeding rates are higher, cesarean rates are lower, and incidences of post-partum depression and mood disorders are decreased.
