Case Study: The MetroHealth System - Let the Youth Lead the Way

Let the Youth Lead the Way is one of four programs in The MetroHealth System's Community Health Advocacy Initiative. The initiative is designed to address health disparities and improve the health status of local residents by engaging community members.

What is it?

Let the Youth Lead the Way is one of four programs in The MetroHealth System’s Community Health Advocacy Initiative. The initiative is designed to address health disparities and improve the health status of local residents by engaging community members. This particular project engages youth in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood to become active participants in their community. The project encourages youth to take ownership of their community and establish relationships with adults in their neighborhood by working together on community projects. In partnership with the local P-16/MyCom initiative, youth are actively planning events that benefit Slavic Village residents. Events include: clothing distribution, an education fair for younger children, and beautification projects. Currently, the teens are developing a mission and vision statement that will define their future endeavors.

Who is it for?

Youth ages 13 to 18 from two local high schools and participants in the local Boys & Girls Club.

Why do they do it?

Research shows that actively engaged youth are less likely to be involved in high-risk behaviors. Further, this project will enhance adolescent connectedness, reduce violence and foster community union.

Impact

Participants have the opportunity to work side by side with local organizations to plan, organize and facilitate projects to improve their community actively. This has allowed students the opportunity to exercise leadership skills and initiate working relationships with a local church and several other area organizations.
