The ThinkFirst Injury Prevention educational programs are aimed at helping children, teens and young adults learn to reduce their risk of injury. Presentations explain how an injury can change a person’s life forever and the importance of safe choices, including key messages such as: Use your mind to protect your body! Drive safely, buckle up, wear protective sports gear, avoid violence, don’t dive into shallow water and avoid falls. Think first!

What is it?

Who is it for?

The program targets 1st- through 12th-grade students.

Why do they do it?

The hospital’s service area represents 8 percent of Mississippi’s population. ThinkFirst seeks to prevent an estimated 1,200 potential injuries per year in the area.

Impact

More than 2,600 school-age children were properly fitted or given a bicycle, ATV or equestrian helmet. Through presentations at five high schools and 11 elementary schools, and six community events, 3,105 students received valuable information about preventing brain and spinal cord injuries.
