Children's Mercy - Center for Environmental Health, Healthy Homes Program

The Healthy Homes program is a partnership between the Center for Environmental Health (CEH), other Children’s Mercy staff, health care providers, community organizations and families to identify and reduce indoor environmental exposures that may cause or worsen health. With the holistic healthy homes approach, CEH staff have been trained to observe and characterize environmental exposures, and recommend action steps to eliminate exposures to create and maintain a safe, healthy home.

Who is it for?

Children in the Kansas City area and throughout the region.

Why do they do it?

The initial focus was home assessments for Children’s Mercy patients with asthma, looking solely for asthma-related triggers. The program has expanded to include children throughout the region with a focus that includes other environmental hazards such as lead-based paint and carbon monoxide, providing a more complete picture of environmental risk related to health.

Impact

More than 1,000 families have participated in the healthy homes program since its inception.
