Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Reduction in a Medium-Size Community Hospital

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection remains the most common health care-acquired infection. To address this, Glens Falls Hospital created an interdisciplinary committee to reduce the CAUTI rate. The hospital focused on removing the Foley catheter as soon as clinically possible, and managing the catheter properly, based on guidelines from the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America/Infectious Disease Society of America. A committee worked with the information technology department to implement catheter removal orders in joint procedure pathways.
