The Economic Contributions of Hospitals Update

Although the role that hospitals play in providing health care is widely understood, the impact of the health care system on the U.S. economy is often overlooked. Hospitals ranked second as a source of private sector jobs in 2004. They provide jobs across a range of skill and salary levels, and create a steady source of employment, even during an economic downturn. In addition, hospitals create a "ripple effect" throughout the economy through their purchase of goods and services from other businesses, community involvement and patient assistance, such as charity care programs.

Published in February 2005 by the AHA and the Lewin Group, this report provides detailed graphs demonstrating the value hospitals bring to the US economy. To download the full TrendWatch report, go to http://www.ahapolicyforum.org/ahapolicyforum/trendwatch/content/

From the AHA Resource Center: Finding Health Statistics on the Web

Two annual publications from the federal government are rich resources of statistics compiled from numerous government agencies and trade/professional associations.

One is Health, United States, 2004 from the National Center for Health Statistics at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/hus.htm. This publication provides over 500 pages of trend data on ambulatory care, inpatient care, determinants and measures of health, health personnel, health facilities, national and state health expenditures, and health care coverage and major federal programs. Each year the report features an accompanying chartbook with a particular focus. This year’s chartbook focuses on trends in the health of Americans with a special feature on drugs, while previous chartbooks [still available on the web] have covered topics such as adolescent health and aging and health.

Statistical Abstract of the United States, 2004-2005, from the U.S. Census Bureau is the second publication. Both the current and earlier editions are available on the web at http://www.census.gov/prod/www/statistical-abstract-04.html. The Statistical Abstract includes not only health statistics but also data on population; education; law enforcement; social insurance and human services; labor force, employment, and earnings; construction; energy; foreign commerce; transportation; prices; industrial outlook; and much more.

Both publications can be printed or downloaded as well as viewed online. Each of these free resources is a great starting point when you’re looking for health statistics.
