WASHINGTON (April 13, 2023) — The American Hospital Association (AHA) today announced that Andy Carter, president and CEO of The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) will be awarded AHA’s 2023 Board of Trustees Award. The Board of Trustees Award is presented to individuals or groups who have made substantial and noteworthy contributions to the work of the AHA on behalf of the hospital field.

Carter will receive the award during an April 24 ceremony at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“Andy’s had an outstanding career across advocacy, business and government,” said Rick Pollack, AHA president and CEO. “He believes passionately that being an effective advocate means not just championing one’s field, but actively working to improve it.”

Carter has been involved with the AHA for more than a decade in various roles including on the Regional Policy Board in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, the AHA Committee on Nominations, the Task Force on Ensuring Access in Vulnerable Communities, the Institute for Diversity and Health Equity Board, the AHAPAC Steering Committee and the Committee on Performance Improvement.

As president and CEO of HAP, Carter successfully advocated for historic prior authorization reform to improve patient access to care and reduce administrative burden for Pennsylvania hospitals. In addition, Carter played a central role in helping Pennsylvania’s hospitals navigate and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through emergency, management, clinical and quality support and communication between the hospital community and government agencies.

Carter will retire in June of 2023.
