American Hospital Association Launches AHA Physician Alliance

WASHINGTON, DC (January 24, 2018) – The American Hospital Association (AHA) today launched the AHA Physician Alliance (Alliance), a new initiative that brings together physicians and their hospitals and health systems in transforming care and advancing health in America. The Alliance provides new resources, services and experiences on a range of issues including well-being, leadership models and health improvement developed specifically for busy physicians within AHA-member organizations.

“When physician and administrative leadership unite, powerful change is possible,” said Melinda Estes, M.D., AHA board member, president and CEO at Saint Luke’s Health System and chair of the AHA taskforce charged with better engaging physician leaders. “That’s why the AHA spent over a year rethinking how hospitals and health systems can better engage and partner with physician leadership to bring that voice into our health care improvement work.”

All Alliance work is framed by three fundamental values that foster shared decision making and forge a common language among all health care leaders: Lead Well. Be Well. Care Well.

  • Lead Well focuses on improving the health of the enterprise and developing the collaborative teams to move organizations forward. The Alliance provides a Physician Leader 360 assessment and health care resources for busy physicians to grow their leadership and management capabilities.

  • Be Well is about improving the health of clinicians. The Alliance offers immersion experiences to address resilience, an in-depth knowledge hub with research and assessment tools as well as interviews with leaders and case examples addressing burnout in their organizations.

  • Care Well prioritizes better health for patients and communities. The Alliance connects quality improvement and population health work across the AHA, giving members access to learning and action networks, participation in the new AHA Value Initiative and opportunities for the physician voice to help shape AHA policy development.

“We believe the Alliance’s work underscores the importance of physician relationships and guides better health and health care,” said Jay Bhatt, D.O., senior vice president and chief medical officer at the American Hospital Association and the president of the Health Research and Educational Trust. “I encourage all physicians in AHA-member institutions to sign up and be part of this exciting opportunity.”
