Business Case for Equitable Care

The path to eliminating disparities in health care has a few roadblocks: limited resources and access to capital, competing regulatory issues and challenges, and resistance to change. But eliminating disparities improves quality of care, efficiency and patient satisfaction, and reduces costs. The HPOE resource, “Rising Above the Noise: Making the Case for Equity in Care,” highlights the business imperative for equity of care and can be used in conversations with hospital staff, board members and community members. This slide presentation also includes a self-assessment checklist for three areas: collection and use of race, ethnicity and language data; cultural competency training for improved patient care; and increasing diversity in governance and leadership. These three areas are priorities for the Equity of Care initiative led by the AHA and four national partners.
