D.C. Marketplace encourages labs to remove race from kidney function test to advance equity
The Health Insurance Marketplace for the District of Columbia is encouraging labs to remove race as a variable in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) formula commonly used to measure kidney function, as recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology to support health equity. The use of race in the equation for eGFR can exacerbate disparities in health outcomes. The D.C. marketplace, known as DC Health Link, covers 100,000 enrollees and 5,300 employers in all 50 states.
