HHS report highlights new ACA coverage numbers; total enrollees increase to 35.8 million

A new report released by the Department of Health and Human Services today indicates that the nation’s uninsured rate reached an all-time low by the end of 2021, concluding that total enrollment for Medicaid expansion, Marketplace coverage and participating states’ Basic Health Program topped out at more than 35.8 million people as of early 2022. The numbers reflect an increase from 27.1 million individuals in 2020. Among the enrollees are a record 21 million due to Medicaid expansion, of whom 16.8 million would have been ineligible for the program prior to the Affordable Care Act’s enactment.
