CMMI Finalizes Kidney Care Model

Special Bulletin
September 21, 2020

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) Sept. 18 issued a final rule implementing a new CMMI payment model named the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Treatment Choices (ETC) model. It is designed to test whether greater use of home dialysis and kidney transplantation for beneficiaries with ESRD will reduce Medicare expenditures, while preserving or enhancing the quality of care. The agency states that both home dialysis and transplantation are supported by providers and patients as preferable alternatives to dialysis conducted in a facility, but utilization has been less than in other developed nations. The model will begin Jan. 1, 2021, and end June 30, 2027.
