CDC issues update on vaping-associated lung injuries

A total of 2,291 patients have been hospitalized for vaping-associated lung injuries in the states, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, and 48 people have died from the condition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today. The agency yesterday removed 175 non-hospitalized patients from the national case count and said it will only report on hospitalizations and deaths going forward. About 80% of hospitalized patients reported using products that contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Dank Vapes, a class of largely counterfeit THC-containing products, was the most common brand, with regional exceptions. CDC last month identified vitamin E acetate as a potential chemical of concern in biologic samples from patients with vaping-associated lung injuries. The agency recommends consumers consider refraining from using e-cigarettes while the investigation continues. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov.
