Clinicians can now look up their preliminary eligibility status for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System, one of two payment pathways for clinicians under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015. Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and certified registered nurse anesthetists must participate in MIPS for 2019 unless they annually bill $90,000 or less in Medicare Part B allowed charges for covered professional services under the physician fee schedule; provide covered professional services to 200 or fewer Part B enrollees; or provide 200 or fewer covered professional services to Part B enrollees. They also can opt to participate if they exceed one or two of those low-volume thresholds. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will update the tool later this year to reflect a clinician’s final eligibility status based on claims submitted through September 2019.
