“A competitive commercial health insurance market is essential for access, affordability and innovation,” writes Melinda Reid Hatton, AHA senior vice president and general counsel, in an AHASTAT blog post today. “No matter how you look at it, Anthem’s proposed acquisition of Cigna presents a substantial risk to such competition on an unprecedented national scope.” Last week, the AHA asked the Department of Justice Antitrust Division to vigorously review proposed acquisitions involving four of the five major U.S. commercial health insurance companies, starting with the Anthem/Cigna mega-deal.
