Implementing New Cyber Guidelines in Health Care: What to Know

Many hospitals are in “react” mode when it comes to cybersecurity. Impending federal guidelines aim to change that mindset, getting hospitals to be better prepared for a cyberattack.  

HHS and the Health Sector Coordinating Council (HSCC) recently released the Cybersecurity Framework Implementation Guide. The Guide aims to help health care organizations align their cybersecurity programs with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), and HHS is encouraging the use of the CSF to be applied in HIPAA risk assessments. Additionally, NIST 800-66r2 was just released, which broadens the scope of incident response planning to include operational technologies and IoT devices, hybrid cloud and multicloud networks, third-party applications and more.
