ECMO: Insights, Strategies and Key Considerations for Developing a Sustainable Program

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or extracorporeal life support (ECLS), is a treatment that uses a synthetic heart and/or lung to support the body when a patient’s own organs are no longer functioning at capacity. Typically used for critically ill adult or pediatric patients, ECMO has the ability to support the body for a long period of time to allow the patient’s heart and lungs to recover. However, it’s survival rate is 30-60%. ECMO is growing in popularity because of its technological advancements, which makes it easier to administer and more effective as a temporary life support treatment.
