Duke University Health System: Leadership Lessons from the Pandemic
Pathologists and health system leaders prepare for the next crisis and clinical challenges

Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021
1 - 2 p.m. Eastern; noon - 1 p.m. Central; 10 - 11 a.m. Pacific

The COVID-19 pandemic halted everyday activities and forced us to take stock of what we value most at work and home, including what brings value to others such as colleagues and patients.

Pathologists at Duke University Health System seized the opportunity to step forward and lead, partnering with health system leaders and lending their laboratory medicine perspective as providers of crucial services and testing to safeguard health care workers and patients from infections and to continue essential medical services. Without their guidance, patient care would grind to a standstill.

Join us to learn how Duke University Health System’s successful partnership during the pandemic changed their thinking about disaster planning and how to be nimble in the face of a significant strain on the health system. Michael B. Datto, M.D., PhD, FCAP, associate professor of pathology and associate vice president and director, Duke Health Clinical Laboratories, and Diana M. Cardona, M.D., FCAP, associate professor of pathology and associate director, Duke Health Clinical Laboratories, will share their experiences.

Attendees Will Learn:

  • The steps Duke University Health System took to respond to changing testing demands and requirements for high-complexity tests and how it overcame such related challenges as supply shortages and electronic health record requirements.
  • The importance of the pathologist and health executive partnership in crisis management for the ongoing pandemic and how including pathologists in discussions with hospital leaders and clinicians benefits both hospital staff and patients.
  • How the pandemic reshaped thinking about quality assurance and quality-control practices for the future.
