COVID Inequities and Outreach Key Takeaways

The recent increase of COVID-19 infections and mortalities attributed to the highly contagious Delta variant has spotlighted the importance of continued messaging aimed at increasing vaccine confidence among unvaccinated individuals. AHA hospitals and partners have found several effective strategies that have been successful in increasing vaccine uptake. Over the coming weeks, we will highlight different strategies and examples of how they have been used to improve vaccine confidence.

We continue to learn new information about COVID-19 every day. One strategy to improve vaccine confidence is education around the virus. By relaying reliable information accurately and in a timely manner to the public we allow people to make their decisions based on facts and also answer the questions that may be the source of their hesitancy.

  • Long Term Care Hospitals Addressing Needs of Long Haul COVID Patients
    AHA’s Joining Hands for Greater Impact initiative highlights resources and stories of successful hospital-community partnerships in getting health care workers and community members vaccinated for COVID-19. In this podcast, hear from Gordon Oakes, director of clinical support services at Overlake Medical Center, and Jeff Friedman, vice president of operations at EvergreenHealth, discuss their partnership to get their Washington state communities vaccinated.

     


    Hospital Partners with Faith-based Group to Vaccinate Muslim Community
    In this first podcast in the Joining Hands for Greater Impact series, AHA’s Priya Bathija talks with leaders from Henry Ford Health System and the Islamic Center of America about their collaboration to increase vaccinations in the Muslim community around Detroit. Learn about the cultural and logistic considerations the partners took into account in order to make their efforts successful.

    On this AHA Advancing Health podcast, Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County in Ft.     Leadership Rounds with Alvin Hoover
    Dr. Hochman was joined in March by Alvin Hoover, CEO of King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven, Miss., who is serving on the front lines of rural health care.

    The conversation covered how KDMC, an independent rural hospital with about 75% of its patients covered by either Medicare or Medicaid, has responded to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including vaccine equity in the race to get shots in arms. Alvin also talked about sustainable ways to meet community needs in the near and long term, including how rural hospitals are defined.

    In this conversation, Elisa Arespacochaga, Interim Executive Lead, Institute for Diversity & Health Equity and Vice President, AHA Physician Alliance, talks with Andrea Custis, President and CEO, Urban League of Philadelphia, about health inequities in Black and underserved communities with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic and the upcoming flu season. In 2017, AHA formed a national strategic alliance with National Urban League to focus on advancing health equity in Black and underserved communities and diversity and inclusion in health care governance.

    SACRED Birth study’s survey tool called a Patient Reported Experience Measure of OBstetric racism©, also known as the PREM-OB Scale, is designed to capture patient experiences during labor, birth, and postpartum and identify obstetric racism in hospital settings. In this podcast, Priya Bathija, Vice President of AHA’s Strategic Initiatives speaks with Dr. Karen Scott, Associate Professor, OB/GYN Hospitalist, and Applied Epidemiologist.
