St. Rose Dominican Hospitals - R.E.D. Rose (Responsible, Early Detection of Breast Cancer)

St. Rose Dominican Hospitals partners with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Avon Foundation to offer R.E.D. Rose (Responsible Early Detection of Breast Cancer). This collaborative program provides free clinical breast exams, mammograms, ultrasounds, surgical consultations, and biopsies to women and men 49 and younger who lack adequate health care coverage or the financial means to obtain the services. Southern Nevada ranks among the highest in the nation for underinsured and uninsured individuals. Because the breast cancer survival rate for both women and men is directly related to how early treatment is sought, the program addresses the need for quality breast cancer screenings, diagnostic screenings, and treatment services. Assistance with support services such as utilities, rent, groceries, and transportation is also available to individuals undergoing breast cancer treatments.

Overview

This program is funded by a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Avon Foundation, in-kind and discounted services from St. Rose physicians (radiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists), and through the hospital. In partnership with this program, the WomensCare Centers provide free support groups, wigs, hats, and turbans as well as free mastectomy bras and prostheses for women who are uninsured and underinsured.

Impact

From July 2010 to June 2011, the program provided 377 screening and diagnostic mammograms, 204 clinical breast exams, 257 ultrasounds, 85 biopsies, and 55 surgical consultations. These procedures resulted in seven breast cancer diagnoses and surgeries. In addition, 43 women received temporary financial assistance to maintain their homes while being treated for breast cancer. Financial assistance for support services totaled $59,206.

Challenges/success factors

Ensuring that adequate funds are available to meet high demand is difficult. This program is successful because of the willingness of physicians who have privileges at St. Rose to participate at reduced fees, the hospital’s dedication to this program, and the hospital’s partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Avon Foundation.

Future direction/sustainability

R.E.D. Rose has expanded services to include more women. This was made possible by program leaders securing additional grants and adding an annual fundraising event. The Rose Regatta Dragon Boat Festival raised $85,000 in its second year.

Advice to others

Maintaining a program like R.E.D. Rose requires the buy-in and dedication of hospital leaders and physicians.
