Overview

Ogden Regional Medical Center offers a Health To You (H2U) membership program designed to meet the health and wellness needs of adults in Weber and Davis Counties. H2U programs are designed to help members to recognize health issues early and empower them to be proactive in managing their health and improve their lifestyle.

For a $20 annual fee, H2U members receive a monthly wellness newsletter listing current offerings at the affiliate such as: free blood lab work once annually, free flu vaccine, additional health fairs and screenings, Healthy Conversations physician lectures and Book Club. For an appropriate fee, H2U members may participate in specially designed events: exercise classes (yoga, tai chi, aerobics, warm water exercise), Chat & Chew (dining group), foot service (nail & callous trim & foot massage) Bunco, and Broadway Across America tickets and travel (local and abroad). H2U also sponsors parties designed to support and encourage members to keep up on important screenings such as mammography, prostate, colonoscopy and bone density.

In addition, H2U members receive national benefits that include: a nationally published health and wellness magazine, prescription discounts, interactive personal health assessment (helps identify health risks), My Health Reminders (reminds members of preventative health screenings and periodic exams), Medline Plus (offers access to medical research libraries), Carington Dental (discounted dental coverage), ADT Companion Service (offers discounted emergency service), plus member discounts at numerous retailers across the nation such as Barnes & Noble and Target.

Impact

Prior to 2005, when H2U became available, a former version of the program, "Senior Friends," had averaged 800 members. The year H2U kicked off, the program attracted a total of 1,700 members. Today, the program maintains 2,000-2,200 members.

Challenges/success factors

The program was initially focused on seniors, but program leaders quickly recognized that adults of all ages were interested. The program dropped the minimum age from age 50 to 21. H2U has been successful because it focuses primarily on health and wellness, offering numerous valuable benefits. Hospital staff are supportive, as is the national H2U staff. H2U members are highly satisfied with the convenient health screens, the lack of lines, the variety of offerings, and the personal touches offered.

Future direction/sustainability

Ogden Regional Medical Center provides a budget to staff and manage the program. The program is licensed by HCA ,and most HCA hospitals have a chapter in-house. H2U directors are responsible for customizing the program to meet local needs. The H2U program is a community outreach initiative. H2U also offers the community opportunities to get acquainted with local physicians and with hospital services.

Advice to others

If you are considering starting a chapter, work closely with the corporate H2U staff and request a successful affiliate director to mentor you.
