St. John's Riverside Hospital - Yonkers Childhood Health Initiative

In existence since 1998, the Yonkers Childhood Heath Initiative (YCHI) has partnered with more than 60 public and private organizations. YCHI’s primary goals center on school-based programs for children that establish proper protocols for asthma treatment, needed immunizations and the establishment of an obesity prevention curriculum that provides nutrition education and better understanding of the role of exercise. These programs teach children lifelong lessons for better health and highlight the positive impact on the educational process.

Who is it for?

Yonkers-area children.

Why do they do it?

St. John’s Riverside Hospital believes that the betterment of their community begins with the health of the children who live there. When a student died from an asthma attack, leaders came together to organize YCHI and educate children and the public about asthma and ways to manage it. The success of the asthma program encouraged YCHI to take on other childhood health issues, in particular, obesity and school immunizations.
