Oswego Health - Day of Wellness

Imagine 2,500 children taking part in healthy and environmentally friendly presentations in a city park overlooking Lake Ontario on a beautiful fall day in late September. The Day of Wellness was the result of months of planning that involved volunteers from Oswego Health, the Oswego City School District, Oswego YMCA, other community organizations and Novelis, which fabricates aluminum for the food and beverage industry.

What is it?

Imagine 2,500 children taking part in healthy and environmentally friendly presentations in a city park overlooking Lake Ontario on a beautiful fall day in late September. The Day of Wellness was the result of months of planning that involved volunteers from Oswego Health, the Oswego City School District, Oswego YMCA, other community organizations and Novelis, which fabricates aluminum for the food and beverage industry.

Oswego Health offered a bike and skateboard safety rotation, as well as numerous water stations on this unusually warm fall day. Oswego Health employees also volunteered in other capacities, including as child escorts. The students started the day with a .6-mile walk from one of the district’s elementary schools to Breitbeck Park, where they spent much of the day. Other exhibits included animal educators, who introduced a variety of creatures and shared conservation information, and presentations on the importance of recycling aluminum and leading healthy lifestyles.

Who is it for?

Elementary school students in kindergarten through sixth grade in the Oswego City School District.

Why do they do it?

The program is designed to increase awareness about the benefits of fitness and to promote recycling in the community.
