Kittitas Valley Community Hospital - Patient Assistance Program

Helping low-income citizens without prescription coverage obtain the drugs they need free of charge, this volunteer-run program acts as a liaison between patients, doctors and pharmaceutical companies to ensure that all paperwork is completed as required. Volunteers maintain ongoing and frequent contact with the patients so that refill requirements are met and their medications will be available without interruption. Currently, five volunteers serve 175 patients.

What is it?

Helping low-income citizens without prescription coverage obtain the drugs they need free of charge, this volunteer-run program acts as a liaison between patients, doctors and pharmaceutical companies to ensure that all paperwork is completed as required. Volunteers maintain ongoing and frequent contact with the patients so that refill requirements are met and their medications will be available without interruption. Currently, five volunteers serve 175 patients.

Who is it for?

Low-income citizens who need regular medications.

Why do they do it?

The extensive application procedures and forms overwhelm many patients and can interrupt the continuity of care. To ensure their community stays healthy, Kittitas Valley Community Hospital volunteers step in to help.

Impact

On average, each patient receives three prescriptions at $70 per prescription. In 2004, the program procured $36,750 in free medications.
