Suburban Hospital and YMCA - Honey I Wrecked the Kids: Why Won't They Listen?

Suburban Hospital has partnered with the YMCA to organize seminars for community residents that address issues facing many parents today. In years past, seminars and workshops have highlighted issues ranging from parenting essentials to the screening of the powerful documentary, Race to Nowhere, which highlighted the stress that students face in school today. This past October, Suburban Hospital and the YMCA hosted “Honey I Wrecked the Kids: Why Won’t They Listen?” a workshop addressing the power struggle that parents face at home. There is a small fee that goes to the YMCA, but fee waivers are available upon request.

Suburban Hospital and the YMCA continue their commitment in educating area parents and will hold another parenting seminar in April 2012 titled “The Healthy Use of Technology with Edward Spector, Psy D.” At the seminar, parents and their teenagers will learn how excessive use of technology including the Internet (such as social networking sites) and smart phones can interfere with one’s social skills.

Who is it for?

Area parents.

Why do they do it?

It has been said that parenting is the most difficult job.

Impact

More than 80 attendees participated in an active dialogue with Alyson Schafer, psychotherapist and one of Canada’s leading parenting experts, as she used humor and visual props to help parents learn a four-step method to move from conflict to cooperation. Feedback from “Honey I Wrecked the Kids” was very positive. Many parents stated that the information Alyson Schafer provided was insightful and useful as parents learned ways to deal with their children without screaming or bargaining. These parenting seminars allow parents to have an open dialogue with other parents as well as health professionals and teachers.
