What is it?

This program is designed to increase child safety awareness. Hospital personnel present programs throughout the three local grade schools and pre-schools on child passenger safety, safe routes to school, bike safety and water safety. Car seats, life jackets and smoke detectors are given to low-income families throughout the year.

Who is it for?

Children, ages 0-14, and their parents.

Why do they do it?

Originally, Meade District Hospital thought it would provide obstetrics (OB) services, so we sent one person to Child Passenger Safety training. Although it did not pursue OB, the hospital realized the importance of child safety and the lack of community awareness. While teaming up with the County Health Department and schools, the message is given to many children and their parents.

Impact

In one year, 61 car seats were checked and 36 car seats were distributed to low-income families. Two bike rodeos were held, and 15 bike helmets distributed. In addition, 50 smoke detectors and 18 personal floatation devices were distributed.
