Bay Area Hospital - MOMS (Management of Maternity Services) Program

MOMS partners an experienced obstetrical nurse with pregnant women and their families to provide free personalized guidance throughout the maternity experience. Assistance is provided with preadmission registration and enrollment for the eight free prenatal classes offered by MOMS. The nurse individualizes teaching about healthy pregnancy as well as birth options and choices, and acts as a support and liaison between the family, community agencies and medical providers throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period. The program also offers an after-baby follow-up home visit, support for postpartum depression, connection to parenting programs and free lactation support.

Who is it for?

All women who plan to deliver at Bay Area Hospital.

Why do they do it?

The goal of the program is to empower women and their families to have a satisfying and safe maternity experience. Research shows that women who are comfortable with their place of birth have improved birth experiences. Studies also show that early and regular prenatal care and education allow timely identification and treatment of fetal health issues, as well as prevent complications during pregnancy, at delivery and postpartum.

Impact

MOMS provides 86 percent of all maternity patients free services; 1,200 class participants in 48 class options per year; and 1,800 nurse visits per year. On follow-up surveys, families report feeling empowered and supported in their birth choices and appreciate the individualized care they receive. Medical providers value the support, teaching and nursing assessments provided to their patients.
