In its worst quarter since forming the Walgreens Boots Alliance with European drugstore chain Alliance Boots GmbH, the Deerfield, Ill.-based retailer says it will further expand its aggressive cost-cutting strategy, adding another $500 million in cuts to the $1 billion previously announced. The company now forecasts that its earnings will remain flat for the year, after having predicted growth of 7-12 percent.

Telehealth Use Surges in Rapidly Changing Market

Even though it accounts for only 2.6 percent of overall medical claims, Telehealth usage surged 53 percent between 2016 and 2017 and continues to grow rapidly. This rate of telehealth growth surpassed that of urgent care centers, retail clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and emergency departments. Culling its database of 28 billion commercial claims, Fair Health conducted research showing that national utilization of alternative places of service continued to grow from 2016 to 2017, but at different rates.
